Staying warm and safe in the mountains isn’t about fads – it’s about using reliable equipment that works when conditions get tough. As a mountain guide and outdoor enthusiast, I’m often asked what gear I carry when temperatures drop. Below are four items I use regularly each winter. Crampons (Ice Cleats)

Icy trails and frozen paths are no joke. Without traction your boots can slip, and the consequences range from bruised pride to serious injuries. Crampons – also known as ice cleats – give your regular hiking boots the grip needed on snow and ice.

Tungsten spikes for traction – Nine strategically placed spikes dig into ice and packed snow to prevent slips
Stay‑on design – A secure toe cap keeps the cleats from shifting or falling off mid‑stride
Quick on/off – They stretch over most footwear and collapse small enough to stash in a pocket
Night‑time safety – Reflective tabs on the heel and toe increase visibility in low light
Cold‑resistant construction – Flexible rubber and reinforced joints stay durable even in frigid temperatures

Why I carry them : Winter trails around Banff National Park and other areas around the Rockies often have sections of glare ice. Pulling these cleats over my boots takes seconds and gives me confidence on exposed ridgelines and frozen paths. They’re lightweight, so I keep them in my pack even on shorter hikes.

Trekking Poles

Trekking poles aren’t just for older hikers. They save your knees on descents, improve balance on uneven terrain and help power you uphill. The poles I use are versatile enough for four‑season outings.

Comfortable EVA grips – Extra‑long EVA foam handles with adjustable wrist straps provide a secure, moisture‑absorbing grip.

This compact stove is ideal for quickly boiling water so you can enjoy your favourite hot drinks out in nature. Of course, it also handles simple meals when you need a warm bite on the trail.

Fall in Banff is hands down one of the most magical times to visit. The golden aspens are the stars of the show, but if you’re lucky enough to catch the larches turning, it’s a sight you’ll never forget. Larch trees are unique because they’re deciduous conifers, meaning their needles turn a vibrant yellow before shedding for winter. You’ll find these gems in spots like Larch Valley, and mid-September to early October is prime time to catch them at their peak.

Banff’s fall season isn’t just about the trees, though. It’s also the perfect time for wildlife sightings, with elk in their full rutting season, bighorn sheep grazing along the highways, and even the occasional bear prepping for hibernation.

Fall hiking in Banff is ideal because the cooler weather makes longer treks more manageable. Whether you’re strolling around Lake Minnewanka or tackling a hike like the Larch Valley Trail, the crisp air and golden scenery provide the perfect backdrop. And trust me, there's nothing quite like standing amidst a grove of larches with the sun hitting those golden needles just right—it's like the mountains are glowing.

One of the lesser-known perks of visiting Banff in fall? The calm. The summer crowds have thinned out, giving you the chance to truly immerse yourself in the beauty of nature without feeling rushed.

A Wildflower Wonderland

Springtime in Banff National Park is honestly something special. There’s nothing like seeing the landscape come to life with vibrant wildflowers after the long winter months. This picture I took along a riverbank in the park captures just a glimpse of the beauty that unfolds here every year.

One of my favourite flowers to spot is Fireweed, with its bright purple-pink blooms adding a pop of color. It's one of the first plants to grow after wildfires, showing how resilient nature can be. You’ll often find it thriving along riverbanks like this, making the contrast between the wildflower meadows and the rushing blue water just stunning.

Other wildflowers, like the Glacier Lily, bring so much charm to the higher elevations. Its bright yellow petals are one of the first signs of spring in the Rockies, and fun fact: bears love munching on these as they come out of hibernation. If you’re into hiking, you might also spot Indian Paintbrush, which adds fiery red or orange accents along trails. It’s fascinating because it’s semi-parasitic, meaning it actually taps into other plants’ roots to survive. Nature sure has its quirks!

And for those who love a good challenge, keep an eye out for the Alpine Forget-Me-Not. These delicate blue flowers can be found high up in alpine meadows, making the effort of hiking up to them even more rewarding. It’s such a special sight against the rugged backdrop of the Rockies.

One of the coolest things about Banff’s wildflower season is that it stretches across elevations, so even as flowers bloom down in the valleys, you’ll still find fresh blooms up high in July and August. That means you’ve got plenty of time to take in these colorful wonders!
